Harvesting Fresh Herbs in Dubai: My First Yield from the Smart Garden 9
The day finally arrived! After weeks of watching my little green sprouts flourish under the LED lights, it was time for the moment I’d been eagerly anticipating: my very first harvest from the Click & Grow Smart Garden 9. The anticipation was palpable. Living in Dubai, where fresh, high-quality herbs can sometimes be a hit or miss (and often pricey), growing my own has been a dream.
I started with basil, mint, and cilantro. Each plant had grown remarkably, filling my kitchen with a subtle, earthy aroma even before I touched them. Carefully, I snipped off the largest, most vibrant leaves, taking care not to over-harvest and allowing the plants to continue their growth cycle. Holding those freshly picked leaves in my hand was an incredibly rewarding feeling – a tangible result of my smart garden efforts.

The taste? Absolutely divine. The basil was intensely fragrant and sweet, far more vibrant than anything I’ve bought from a supermarket. The mint was crisp and invigorating, perfect for a refreshing iced tea, and the cilantro added a burst of fresh, zesty flavour to our evening tacos. We ended up making a simple Caprese salad with the basil and a refreshing homemade mint lemonade – both elevated by the sheer freshness of the herbs.
Here are a few things I learned during this exciting first harvest, especially relevant for us indoor gardeners in the UAE:
- Harvesting Technique Matters: Don’t just pull leaves. Snip the outer, larger leaves, or trim the top growth to encourage the plant to become bushier and produce more. This also helps in maintaining the plant’s health and extends its productive life.
- Regular Harvesting Encourages Growth: It might seem counter-intuitive, but regularly harvesting your herbs prevents them from “bolting” (going to seed) and focuses their energy on producing more delicious leaves. Aim to harvest a little bit every few days once they’re established.
- Don’t Forget the Basics: Even with a smart garden, keeping an eye on the water reservoir and ensuring the plant pods are healthy is key to continuous, bountiful yields. The built-in indicator on the Smart Garden 9 makes this easy, but a quick check never hurts.
This first yield has truly cemented my love for smart gardening. It’s not just about convenience; it’s about having access to incredibly fresh, flavourful ingredients right at my fingertips, right here in the heart of Dubai. The taste difference is undeniable, and the satisfaction of growing your own produce is immense.
Next up, I’ll be exploring how to extend the life of my plants and perhaps even try some new varieties. Join me in Part 9 as I dive into optimizing my Smart Garden for continuous, long-term harvests!
